Production on season 5 wrapped in November 2022, but additional filming took place to make sure the series is sent off in style.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 release date

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 will premiere on Thursday 4th April. Two episodes will be released at once with the rest airing weekly on Thursdays.

The show was officially renewed for season 5 in January 2022, with the series continuing to be one of the top performers on streaming service Paramount Plus.

It'll be the fifth and final season for the popular show, with star Martin-Green previously issuing a statement of thanks.

The actress said: "I can hardly believe that this mind-blowing journey with Star Trek: Discovery is ending.

"I'm astoundingly blessed by God to have played Captain Michael Burnham and to have taken part in a legacy alongside an extraordinary cast, phenomenal crew and remarkable writing team."

The actress went on to thank CBS Studios and Paramount Plus, "who insisted on making television history".

"I will never forget how it felt to stand together as a show family, cradling the heirloom of Trek with all those from the franchise at large and with the fans," she added.

"The fans welcomed us into their hearts as we launched a new iteration of Trek, and an entire entertainment platform, and we'll never forget it.

"Sixty-five episodes later, here's to the entire company of Star Trek: Discovery, to the show and its fifth and final season, to its beloved fans and to all those who envision a better future. Let's fly… "

Who is in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 cast?

The principal members are all expected to return, led by Sonequa Martin-Green in the lead role of Discovery's Captain Burnham.

It's likely she will be reunited with actor and contortionist Doug Jones in the prosthetic-heavy role of Saru, the first Kelpien to join the ranks of Starfleet.

Other actors in the Star Trek: Discovery supporting cast include Anthony Rapp as Paul Stamets, Mary Wiseman as Sylvia Tilly, Wilson Cruz as Hugh Culber and Tig Notaro as Jett Reno.

David Ajala and Blu del Barrio are more recent additions as Book and Adira respectively, joining the cast in season 3 and becoming firmly established in the fourth outing.

Other big-name talent including The Mummy star Oded Fehr and legendary director David Cronenberg have also joined the cast in recent years in recurring roles.

Expect some new faces to appear when Discovery returns, too, with casting announcements likely to be made over the coming weeks and months – watch this space for updates.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 plot

The official synopsis for season 5 says: "In season 5, Captain Burnham and the crew of the USS Discovery uncover a mystery that sends them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries."

It continues: "But there are others on the hunt, as well… dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves, and will stop at nothing to get it."
