Adapted from the 2014 novel of the same name by Martin Amis, who passed away in May 2023, the film revolves around Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel), a Nazi officer who was the longest-serving commandant of Auschwitz. Höss was hanged in 1947 at the age of 45, after being convicted of war crimes.

However, the film never actually ventures inside the concentration camp itself, instead focusing on Höss’s seemingly idyllic family life with his wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller) and their five children on the outskirts of Auschwitz and the atrocities therein.
