A busy California family has lost their Christmas spirit and it's up to Santa's elf Summer Glau to help them regain the feeling in this festive confection that's cute if on the routine side. All big eyes and goofy smiles, she's soon working her North Pole magic on the two attention-starved children of the house: solving their individual issues with excessive ease and simplistic solutions - not to mention an abundance of candy canes. But predictably the parents, especially jealous mum Eva La Rue (CSI: Miami), prove harder to charm, while the engaging events are further complicated by Glau's instant attraction to La Rue's brother (a likeable John Brotherton) that's against her mission's rules. As with most seasonal fantasies, it's a patchwork of well-worn ideas and messages, yet what the TV movie lacks in originality it compensates for in sweetness. Glau (who's best known for action parts in cult sci-fi shows like Firefly and The Sarah Connor Chronicles) is particularly nicely cast, adding both heart and playfulness to her fish-out-of-water role.
